National Academy of Sciences

National Academy of Sciences - NAS, like many organizations, was in the need of implementing new technologies to meet its business requirements. One such segment of the implementation consisted of a new and distinct network and systems management solution. National Academy of Sciences realized the importance for a set of tools and accompanying process that would enable them to proactively manage and monitor their networking & systems enterprise.

NAS selected OpenView and Cisco 2000 family of products as the foundation pieces of their management solution.

NAS tasked Savli Group to make this happen. Savli Group's consultants began by assessing NAS's existing management solutions & Ops processes. Upon completion of this activity, Savli crafted an a phased implementation road-map to plan, design, build, and deploy NAS's network and systems management solution. NAS reviewed and accepted this plan, at which point, Savli consultants designed a Phase 1 Network Node Manager and Cisco 2000 based architecture, implemented the solution, trained the 24x7 Operations staff, and assisted in the overall deployment activities.

Specifically, in this phase, Savli Group performed following core functions to realize National Academy of Science's objective of developing an operations ready network management solution:

  • Assessed NAS's IT environment from a tool and process stand-points
  • Provided process and tool centric recommendations
  • Performed Network Management System (NMS) focused pre-install system level checks
  • Loaded required OS and application focused patches
  • Installed Hewlett Packard Network Node Manager and Cisco 2000 applications
  • Configured these applications per NAS's Phase I requirements
  • Demonstrated their core capabilities to NAS Project Manager and IT personnel

As an on-going effort to further develop its core network management capabilities, National Academy of Sciences retained Savli Group, Inc. to enhance and build on work performed in Phase I to reach its final objective of realizing a state-of-the-art management solution. The benefit towards implementing the Phase II enhancements for NAS, was the ability to easily and efficiently recognize, identify, and pinpoint network-related problems when and before they occur.

To successfully reach this mission critical objective, Savli Group Inc. was tasked to enhance and refine the two tool sets that currently comprise NAS's network management solution: Hewlett Packard's Network Node Manager and Cisco System's Cisco 2000. Upon completion of tool-set refinements, Savli Group was also asked to provide a detailed demonstration of the management solution as well as provide knowledge transfer to select NAS personnel.

Project Status: Savli Group successfully completed the tool-set and process focused customization tasks and worked with NAS to deploy this enhanced solution on its Operations floor. Based on these successes, NAS has already commenced a dialogue with Savli to integrate ManageX and ITO to the existing tool-set mix.
